Australians are 'recoiling' from the British monarchy following Harry and Meghan’s ‘farcical carry on’, which is driving support for Australia becoming a republic, former Socceroo Craig Foster has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have engaged in a long-running media campaign since stepping aside from royal duties in 2020, with the couple’s recent Netflix series and Harry’s ghost-written memoir generating countless headlines about the Royal Family.

Mr Foster cited Ipsos polling conducted in December – following the release of Harry and Meghan’s Netflix series – showing 54 per cent of Australians support Australia ending formal ties with the British monarchy.“There was an affinity with Elizabeth over a very long time – over many, many generations of Australian life.”Former Socceroo Craig Foster was elected as chair of the Australian Republic Movement in Novvember, taking over from author and columnist Peter FitzSimons.

Mr Foster said Australia becoming a republic signal the beginning of a “third era of Australian history”. The Albanese Government has committed to holding a referendum on the republic in a second term of government, should it be re-elected.

Mr Morgan said most troubling are the statements related to Prince Harry’s time serving in Afghanistan and the Taliban’s response. “The fact that, calling the Duke of Sussex a war criminal, he should be tried, as well as kind of being a coward for some of the things that he said in his book that he’s undertaken.”
