Rory McIlroy is as close to the deal and the game’s powerbrokers as anybody outside the smoky backrooms can be and, on Wednesday at the RBC Canadian Open, he seemed to be hinting that it was the PGA Tour pouncing on a LIV Golf team that was on its heels.
McIlroy also clarified the timeline of when he found out about the deal. As hard as it was hard to fathom that 99.9% of players found out via social media at the same time as the rest of us, it was nearly impossible to believe that McIlroy found out the same way. McIlroy said he knew there were background discussions going on and that lines of communication had been opened, but he didn’t expect anything to happen as quickly as it did.
