After a chastening opening-day loss at home to Brighton, Erik ten Hag will have been expecting a big improvement when they headed to Brentford for the Saturday teatime clash.
It resulted in an exasperated reaction from Ten Hag but the gesticulations from wantaway star striker Cristiano Ronaldo were in stark contrast, with the Portuguese geeing his teammates up and trying to get them to go again despite conceding in comical fashion. Ronaldo was making his first competitive start for United since reports emerged over the summer that he wants to leave Old Trafford in search of Champions League football. The Portuguese superstar was only a second-half substitute in last weekend's loss to Brighton as Ten Hag raised eyebrows by deploying Christian Eriksen in an unfamiliar false-nine role.
