A month after the death of his hockey star son from brain cancer, Ruslan Amirov conveyed a heartfelt message to the Leafs and hockey fans.
“Thank you for the attention and participation that the hockey community, clubs, organizations and fans have given us. Thank you to the Maple Leafs. Personally to Brendan and Kyle for the way they embraced Rodion, empathized and took part in his journey.”
Rodion was insistent on getting permission to come to Toronto at last season’s training camp, though only allowed to work out off-ice. He was included in the opening-night player introductions, sparking an emotional ovation at Scotiabank Arena. He recounted when Rodion was 10 and in shaky handwriting put down his fondest wishes on paper “to become the best hockey player in the world and glorify God. Win the Olympics, the Gagarin Cup, the Stanley Cup. Glorify God. Be a good man.”“My son taught me simple and important things. And I’m thinking: My God, what would I do in situation? I probably wouldn’t have put up with it.
He actually gained weight, looked and felt better. He wanted to come to Toronto, having had another encouraging vision.
