A small island town in Occidental Mindoro has been chosen as among the poorest and farthest communities to be adopted into Vice President Leni Robredo’s Angat-Buhay program.

Robredo’s second visit to the 22 fishermen of sunken Filipino fishing boat Gem-Ver also put on the spotlight Ilin Island, which she said is in need of dire assistance.

“Dahil very dry at mainit ‘yung lupa, para may isang cropping period lang sila ,” Robredo, who campaigns for the fringes of society, said. “Iyong mga magsi-senior high, lilipat sa San Jose. Sobrang gastos. Magbo-boarding house doon, ang pinakamura daw, 1,500 [pesos]. So maraming mga pamilya ang hindi na nagsi-senior high iyong mga anak, dahil sa gastos ,” she said.

During her visit, the Filipino fishermen also received global positioning system and fish-finding equipment from an Angat Buhay partner apart from the cash donations.
