Columnist recalls watching the 1972 Summit Series hockey tournament between Canada and the Soviet Union

Bobby Lalonde of the Vancouver Canucks attempts to get a puck past Montreal Canadiens goalie Ken Dryden during a National Hockey League playoff game in 1975. In his new book, Dryden said the 1972 Summit Series revolutionized hockey. - POSTMEDIA FileWe laughed as we looked at the poster pinned to the bulletin board at the back of my Grade 10 English class.

Their names meant nothing to us: Boris Mikhailov, Alexander Maltsev, Yuri Lebedev, Alexander Yakushev, Valeri Kharlamov. And the goalie, Vladislav Tretiak. Our road hockey games took place in my parent’s driveway – it was the location of choice because it was paved, not all driveways were at the time. And it even had low cement curbing, perfect for bounce-passing our tennis ball puck to a teammate.

Then the Russian goals started going in. One, two … four, five…six…SEVEN. In Montreal, the home of my beloved Canadiens. Game 2, a few days later, was a return to the normal world of Canadian hockey superiority. We won 4-1. Esposito scored. Cournoyer went next. Peter Mahovolich somehow skated around the entire Russian team to put in number three. His big brother Frank added one more just for giggles.
