Richard Marles has downplayed concerns about a Chinese spy ship that entered Australian shores during one of Australia's largest joint-military exercises.

The two-week logistical exercises designed to strengthen the nation's military ties with the United States and other allies began in Sydney on Friday.

"I've been attending Talisman Sabre now for a number of years and China always watches this exercise and that's fine. It's always done in accordance with the international law of the sea," he told host Jaynie Seal. "And for us, of course, part of the task of our defence force is to contribute to the collective security of the region in which we live. And that means working and training with our partners and our allies."

Addressing media, Lt Gen. Bilton provided more detail on the discovery of the Chinese naval ship, reaffirming Australia was"well prepared" for Beijing's presence. Mr Del Toro said the"most important message" Beijing should take away from Talisman Sabre was the commitment to common values shared by those involved.
