A teenage volunteer charged with deliberately lighting several fires in the New South Wales Hunter Valley during winter is released on bail under strict conditions.

A teenage volunteer firefighter has won a second bid for bail after he was charged with deliberately lighting 13 fires in New South Wales' Hunter Valley region during winter. The 18 year old was originally denied bail after being deemed an unacceptable riskRural Fire Service volunteer Jack Hardidge, 18, was arrested at a home in Aberglasslyn last week.

Strike Force Glenarvon detectives had investigated several suspicious bushfires in the region, some of which Mr Hardridge had allegedly fought to contain, before arresting him. He was charged with 15 offences, including 13 counts of intentionally causing fire and being reckless as to its spread. Maitland Local Court heard the alleged offending happened over a two-month period between June and August, with blazes lit at Weston, Pelaw Main, Bellbird, Greta, Aberglasslyn, Melville and Cessnock.Last Thursday, Mr Hardidge applied for bail but it was refused after it was alleged he posed an unacceptable risk. This includes not leaving home unless he is in the company of his father or his legal representatives.

An acceptable person has also been required to put up $20,000 surety — money that will be forfeited if conditions are not complied with.
