Review: Whimsical story-play about dogs with one important job is utterly engaging yyc
Blind from birth, Kilpatrick recalls, when she was five, her parents gave her and her brother a pet dog. She loved the dog and it proved to be gentle, attentive and protective but Kilpatrick never envisioned getting a guide dog. She was far too adept with her white cane. That changed when Kilpatrick began working with dementia patients who would leave obstacles in their wake. She knew she needed a dog to help her manoeuvre around the facility.
Kilpatrick couldn’t understand why she was always able to get a table at the busy coffee shop in her neighbourhood until a staff member explained it was Tulia who would select a table and then move the people who were seated there.Gwenny’s successor Margaret was easily distracted by other dogs and especially by squirrels so she had to retire early and just be a dog. Tulia retired during the pandemic and loved the fact Kilpatrick was confined to their apartment.
Raising Stanley/Life With Tulia takes its audiences into Kilpatrick’s life as well as those of her dogs and those insights are just as memorable.
