A quartet of technicians follow Perryman with cameras projecting images of his pain and confusion on screens. It’s as if they are creating a video that will remain forever in Rose’s subconscious. Audience members can choose to concentrate solely on Perryman or they can watch the technicians or watch a bit of each. This is the kind of theatricality that has become the trademark of Ghost River.

Ghost River Theatre’s world premiere of Struck with Daniel J. Perryman and Nathan Schmidt runs until Feb. 11 at West Village Theatre. In the second half of the play, Rose views the sudden, unexpected death of his father six years ago as another lightning strike. In an instant, his life was once again irrevocably altered and there was nothing he could have done to anticipate or prevent it.

This act feels confused and unfocused and far more self-indulgent than the first half. Schmidt is a charismatic performer but even he can’t hold the audience’s attention for an hour when Rose doesn’t seem sure of what he wants to say that hasn’t already been explored in the first half.Article content
