It has some challenging themes, but it\u0027s thoroughly entertaining.
Morissette has also said she was determined not to make a jukebox musical, which would have been a straightforward matter of assembling a cast to present the songs as close to their original forms as possible. Neither is the show a musical memoir that recounts episodes from her own life. In other words, you’re not going to find out who went down on whom in the theatre.
On the surface, they seem like an ideal family unit, but we soon see the cracks. Mary Jane, who was recently injured in a car accident, is hiding her secret addiction to oxycodone as well as some long-suppressed trauma. Steve is hiding his addiction to porn. Nick, a senior who’s just been accepted to Harvard, has never been to a party because he’s always been too busy with swim practice or tutoring sessions, and Frankie is caught up in the injustice of a world she doesn’t feel she belongs in.
Also noteworthy are the performances by Chanel as Frankie and Jade McLeod, who’s from Ontario, as Frankie’s best-friend-with-benefits, Jo. In a show-stopping moment, it’s McLeod, as jilted Jo, who delivers the massive Pill song, You Oughta Know, flipping the gender roles and turning up the heat with a sizzling vocal snarl.
The set is fairly simple by Broadway standards, with a live, six-piece band situated on a platform above the stage. All the songs from Pill are worked into the tale, along with a handful from other albums and two new tracks. Digital images help set the scene, whether it’s the Healy home, the kids’ school, the coffee shop where moms hang out or the party where everyone gets drunk, a condition hilariously portrayed through choreography.
