Researchers hope the study will help discover “new, cannabinoid-based therapies” to help injured athletes in a variety of sports
The NHL Alumni Association has announced a clinical research partnership with LP giant Canopy Growth and NEEKA Health Canada. The research will investigate “the efficacy of cannabinoids as an integral part of a novel treatment for post-concussion neurological diseases” in retired NHL players, notes a Canopy press release.Citing research published in 2012, it is estimated that approximately 1.6 and 3.

They also hope to use the results to help individuals outside of athletics dealing with brain injuries and their subsequent aftermath. “We have seen the debilitating effects of chronic repeated head injuries on the lives of patients and their families,” says NEEKA founder and CEO, Dr. Amin Kassam, expressing hope that the study will “demonstrate the immense and unexplored opportunity in cannabis-based remedies, particularly when synergized by novel treatment paradigms, such as digital mental health and behavioural therapy.”
