City committee, architects make moves to hamper Premier Doug Ford’s plan to demolish the Science Centre and move its programming to a redeveloped Ontario Place
City councillors fighting the Ford government’s Ontario Place redevelopment scheme, includingand moving its programming to the lakefront, got some good news Thursday.
To build anything else — Premier Doug Ford’s government says it wants housing — “the lease would have to be renegotiated with the City and TRCA,” the city says., called that “a bit of good news.” But he speculated the Ford government could raze the centre and then force the city to approve condo towers there.that the province wants finalized by the end of 2023.
“The province can start expropriation proceedings, but we can fight expropriation,” said Perks, noting city council could override the committee’s decision but only with the support of two-thirds of the 25 council members. “It forms a relationship with its landscape — it starts going down in terraces, responding to those changes in elevation trees poke through different pavilions as you’re walking by,” León said.Stephanie Mah, president of Architecture Conservancy Ontario’s Toronto branch, said the Science Centre was one of the first interactive science museums in the world.
“So the impacts are pretty severe if you’re demolishing this building, just from an environmental perspective,” Mah said. Kelly Alvarez Doran, director at Ha/f Climate design and visiting professor at the University of Toronto, estimated the Science Centre’s embodied carbon footprint at the equivalent of 50,000 people flying from Toronto to London.
