abc.net.au/news/bee-swarm-monitoring-in-macedon-ranges/102385310Beekeeping groups in Victoria's Macedon Ranges are investigating feral bee swarms in an effort to stop them displacing native birds and animals. The swarms form when beehives divide as part of their reproduction processTree hollows are hot property in the bush, with native Australian wildlife already competing for homes due to climate change and habitat loss from forestry and urbanisation.

"The bees are a little bit particular about the volume of the space they occupy, and it has to be weatherproof," Mr Sansom said.Woodend Men's Shed members had already been building wildlife nest boxes to help with the decline in tree hollows.Men's Shed nesting box coordinator Paul Muller said the project had been a bit challenging.

"I think there's about 2,000 wooden pieces going into this project, and we're using reclaimed wood for the frames." Mr Rixon said each volunteer would be responsible for two bee bait boxes in their area of observation, which they would check twice a week for bee activity.
