JOHN'S, N.L. — A cantilever pedestrian bridge in Bowring Park that was granted historic site status a few years ago will get a facelift this summer.
St. John’s Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary said she is excited to see the work done on the bridge, which she has been advocating for since 2017. The bridge was designed by Montreal architectural firm Van Ginkel Associates, and Sir Ove Arup was the structural engineering consultant. Blanche Lemco Van Ginkel was the first woman to head a faculty of architecture in Canada and be elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and Arup is well-known for a number of works, including being the design engineer behind the Sydney Opera House.
“It’s such a beautiful bridge, which I, like many, knew nothing about the history of for a long time,” she said. “It’s important when we discover things like this in our city that we put the time and effort into preserving them.”
