Just 30 minutes from Vancouver, with a trailhead wedged between two driveways, the Quarry Rock hike is one of the most popular in the region.

The closure of the popular trail was painful for Lower Mainlanders seeking relief from isolation during the pandemic, in part because the trail is easy to navigate, family friendly and less intense than the Grouse Grind. But the popularity of the trail has long been a challenge for the District of North Vancouver. In 2018, the district had to impose crowd-control measures after counting up to 3,000 people on the trail on a good summer day, and logging 30 medical incidents over a 12-month period.

The Burnaby couple suggested hikers should come early if they need to park a car, and be respectful of local residents’ privacy. For those who plan to return to Quarry Rock, parking is scarce, and a section of Gallant Avenue closest to the trailhead is closed to traffic due to construction of the Livable Deep Cove project, which began in February.
