Loss of confidence in Saint Mary's leadership | SaltWireSYDNEY, N.S. — Gregory O'Keefe was the kind of teacher who inspired students without them realizing it.
"His real-life experiences and his way to tell a story is what really kind of impacted me and made that class one of my most enjoyable classes in my grad year."Not only did O'Keefe draw on his experiences travelling to countries like South America, Africa and Australia, he also brought in his love of photography and the Charles' Schulz cartoon Peanuts.
"You felt like you were a friend to him," she said."The authority was always there, the respect was always there for him as a teacher, but Mr. O'Keefe could relate to you on a different level." Michelle Biron MacKinnon remembers how he pushed her when she was in his Modern World Problems class when she was one of three students chosen to participate in a mock Commonwealth conference in Halifax.
Greg O'Keefe, left, with Harry Doucette at a protest at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Nov. 21, 1981. CONTRIBUTED/NOVA SCOTIA TEACHERS UNION - ContributedFellow teachers were also inspired and motivated by O'Keefe when working beside him at school or protesting on picket lines with the teachers' union.
When O'Keefe began working with educators internationally, helping bring education to third-world countries and girls who were previously unable to attend school, MacDonald was also there. As they were working with educators and teachers' unions around the globe to create the Education International organization, O'Keefe called on MacDonald to negotiate with two countries unwilling to join because of their conflict with each other.
"He wanted to be happy and he wanted other people to be happy. He was a thoughtful and caring person," said Colleen, 48, who is a lawyer. "He was always able to speak with anybody he met. World leaders or strangers on the street, who would talk to them the same way and show them the same respect," said Colleen.
