ILOILO CITY — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has announced a decrease in overcrowding in jail facilities in Region 6 (Western Visayas) with the congestion rate now at 280 percent.
ILOILO CITY — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology has announced a decrease in overcrowding in jail facilities in Region 6 with the congestion rate now at 280 percent.BJMP Region 6 Director Simeon Dolojo Jr. said last year's congestion rate was at 340 percent.'This is because of our intervention to construct and produce more jail facilities. In some other jails, we have our facilities rehabilitated, and we are already maintaining it,' Dolojo told The Manila Times on Tuesday.
The new facility in Iloilo can accommodate a total of 2,000 persons deprived of liberty from Iloilo City, including both male and female populations.BJMP-6 reports that the total PDLs across the more than 40 jail facilities they manage in the region reaches 9,969.Dolojo said around 70 to 80 percent of the PDLs were involved in illegal drug activities.Currently, 1,796 personnel serve the PDLs, which is not sufficient to meet the ideal guard-to-inmate ratio, according to the BJMP-6 director.
