on Thursday night shone a light on one of the more bizarre decisions of the AFL’s off-season.The Saints made their head of recruiting, Chris Toce, redundant in December despite his selection of Mattaes Phillipou, Darcy Wilson and Lance Collard across the previous two drafts.
Simon Dalrymple, who has a long-standing relationship with list boss Stephen Silvagni, crossed from Sydney as effectively Toce’s replacement, with St Kilda justifying the redundancy by adding salary cap and player movement responsibility to Dalrymple’s job description.The Toce decision followed the Saints’ removal of James Gallagher as list manager after four years in the role, shortly after Ross Lyon’s return as coach. Silvagni, a close Lyon confidante, replaced him.
Toce is considered the frontrunner to be Richmond’s new national recruiting manager after Matt Clarke won West Coast’s list manager job. Port Adelaide’s Anthony Parkin and Collingwood’s Adam Shepard are also in contention. McDonald is averaging 14 disposals, eight marks and six rebound 50s since replacing Adam Tomlinson for the round one win over Western Bulldogs, while performing well as a pure defender.It is hard to know whether to praise a player’s willingness to risk getting hurt to try to win a hard ball in these complicated concussion times. Brain injuries have become the biggest issue in the sport as a mounting number of players’ lives are ruined, and court cases continue to pile up.
They abandoned that passive approach at quarter-time – which Mitchell conceded was “not a sustainable way to play” – and managed to narrowly win the second term, but the damage was done.“I think some of the coaching of that; we have to have an assessment. We need to look at the plan, why we couldn’t execute a part of it,” Mitchell said post-match.
