The cut in back office operating expenses for departments is forecast to result in a fall in departmental expenses over the four-year period from $26.1 billion in 2023-24 to $25.7 billion.“The speed of government needs to return to normal. We need to get back from a post-crisis environment to one where we’re dealing with the business of government in a normal and structured way.”
The cuts come after employee expenses rose by more than $7 billion, or 27 per cent, during the pandemic. Employee costs are budgeted to now rise at a modest 2.7 per cent a year, or by between $39.8 billion and $43.1 billion over the next four years.
