The ICRC , emphasizing its neutrality, stated that the escalating violence has led to 'a proliferation of dehumanizing language and of false and misleading information about the ICRC and our work in the current conflict.
'\The organization acknowledged its involvement in facilitating the transfer of Palestinians out of Israeli detention and hostages held in the Gaza Strip since Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023. However, it faced criticism following chaotic scenes during the release of hostages, where masked fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, carrying automatic weapons, struggled to control a surging crowd. ICRC officials were accused of not intervening in this display of intimidation and public humiliation. The ICRC responded, stating: 'Ensuring the safety and security of the handover operations is the responsibility of the parties to the agreement.' It further explained that 'Interfering with armed security personnel could compromise the safety of ICRC staff, and more importantly that of the hostages.' \The ICRC also addressed the incident in Ramallah where people carrying Hamas flags boarded their buses during the release of Palestinian detainees, stating that they did not give permission for this and lacked the capacity to prevent it. The organization reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of all parties involved. It stated that it has been actively engaging with Israeli authorities to allow for the resumption of ICRC visits and family contacts for Palestinian detainees. Regarding the wounded in Gaza, the ICRC said it has received requests to evacuate hospitals in the north but faces difficulties in accessing the area due to security concerns and roadblocks. Following the ceasefire, the ICRC is deploying more personnel, including doctors, to Gaza.
