A photo of Queen Elizabeth II taken by Aidan Zann-Roland during the royal visit in 2010. Contributed.TRURO, N.S. — Paul Zann can vividly recall when he and his grandchildren met Queen Elizabeth II at Pier 21 in Halifax in 2010.
Zann states that he, his wife and his three grandchildren drove out from Truro to witness the royal visit. He remembers how, on the way, he asked his grandchildren not to speak to the Queen unless she spoke to them first, adding that his granddaughter Maia should curtsy. Meanwhile, Zann’s other grandchild, Aidan, had been awaiting the Queen to pass him by so he could snap a photo. When she was only a few meters away, Aidan leaned out and took a picture. The Queen smiled and nodded to the boy as she walked by.
The Canadian teams had picked two athletes from each sport to meet the Royals. Smith was a competitive weightlifter at the time, participating in the Commonwealth Games. He was one of the weightlifters chosen to meet them.“We were told what to say, and don’t speak unless they speak to you. The girls were to curtsy, and the men were to dip their heads a little.”
