Shadow Immigration and Citizenship Minister Dan Tehan says the previous government “thought it was the right decision” to recognise West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

This follows Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s announcement Labor would reverse Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital, hitting out at former prime minister Scott Morrison for his decision to “play politics” in shifting the position.

“I obviously support the position that we had, that the previous government had,” Mr Tehan told Sky News Australia.Mr Tehan denied Ms Wong’s claims the decision was politically motivated to win the seat of Wentworth in 2018. “It was a decision that was … made by the government at the time because we thought it was the right decision to make.”
