Provincial and territorial leaders wrote to the federal government in January asking it to implement a reverse onus for some firearms offences, meaning it would be up to the accused to prove why they should be granted bail. Lametti said the government is giving that “serious consideration.”
“This has caused a notable shift in the public view of criminal justice. It has also caught the attention of provincial and territorial leaders, mayors and police. And the issue they are focusing on is the bail system.” The bill was introduced in the House of Commons Monday, but unlikely to come up for consideration any time soon. Caputo said he was “open to talking” with other Conservatives about trading spots with other proposed legislation so the bill is considered sooner, but would keep such discussions “behind closed doors.”
