Austin Reaves poured in a career-high 38 points, LeBron James added 29 and the Los Angeles Lakers held on to defeat the Brooklyn Nets 102-101 on Friday night. Reaves , who was 13 for 23 from the field and 8 for 8 from the foul line, surpassed his previous career high of 35 points (achieved twice, most recently on December 31st against Cleveland). He was especially clutch in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points, including three 3-pointers.
The Nets, who suffered a franchise-record 59-point defeat to the LA Clippers on Wednesday, had a chance to win at the buzzer but D’Angelo Russell missed a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds remaining. James secured the rebound, sealing the Lakers’ second straight victory. Russell, traded by the Lakers to the Nets, had 19 points in his first game against his former team. Zaire Williams and Tosan Evbuomwan also scored 15 apiece for the Nets. Meanwhile, in San Antonio, Santi Aldama scored a career-high 29 points and the Memphis Grizzlies cruised to a 140-112 victory over the Spurs, handing San Antonio their largest losing margin of the season. Desmond Bane added 22 points and 14 assists, and Jaylen Wells chipped in with 22 points to help Memphis sweep the two-game set in San Antonio, where the Grizzlies have now won nine straight. Devin Vassell led San Antonio with 21 points, Stephon Castle added 20, and Victor Wembanyama had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Ja Morant was sidelined due to a sore right foot, missing his 18th game of the season and becoming ineligible for All-NBA teams, MVP, and other awards as he hasn’t played the required 65 games. In Chicago, LaMelo Ball scored 26 points, Miles Bridges had 21 and the Charlotte Hornets escaped with a 125-123 win over the Chicago Bulls. Mark Williams added 19 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Hornets, who secured their second straight win for just the second time this season. Charlotte has won three of four after a 10-game losing streak. The Hornets won without Brandon Miller, their No. 2 scorer, who was announced to have a torn ligament in his right wrist after the game. Miller, averaging a career-high 21 points, will be out indefinitely. Nikola Vucevic scored a season-high 40 points — including 17 in the fourth quarter — and had 13 rebounds, but Chicago dropped a season-high fourth straight. Zach LaVine scored 19 points and Coby White added 18 for the Bulls. Lonzo Ball, playing against his younger brother, had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
