Another new PGA Tour schedule, and elevated events have the Canadian Open once again fighting for its spot in the golf calendar.

In an effort to get the new-look PGA Tour up an running quickly, 2023 was always going to be a complicated season.

“The difficult thing is it’s premature to know what the 2024 schedule will look like,” RBC executive vice-president Mary DePaoli told Postmedia in a one-on-one interview. “It could have pressure alleviated or it could be even more challenging, depending on where the PGA Tour decides to finalize that schedule and our place in it.”Article content

At first glance, the ideal solution would be to have the Canadian Open become a designated event going forward, insuring a great field and a great spot on the golf calendar. The problem with that — beyond strong competition from scores of other tournaments for the distinction — is that these designated events are expected to be no-cut tournaments with limited fields of 70-80 top players. In other words, not exactly a feasible format if you want to host an actual national open.

“When we do announce the schedule it’s more likely those events that will be in those positions will be in those positions long-term,” Monahan said at Quail Hollow.
