Across the province, eight attempted child abductions or similar activities have occurred since July 27, five of which occurred in September.
Of all the instances of attempted child abductions in the province recently, so far police have only one photo of a vehicle. A man driving this red Dodge Journey approached a young girl walking home from school in Gander on Sept. 22. He was naked from the waist down, and asked her to get into the vehicle. - RCMP handout photoCARMANVILLE, N.L.
“It is just bizarre that we’ve had this many,” said RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Jolene Garland. The first reported instance occurred on July 27 in Frederickton, a community of about 220 people, located a short, eight-minute drive from Carmanville. The driver demanded she get in the vehicle. When she declined, the man repeated himself two more times. The girl ran home. Police said they conducted numerous patrols, but the vehicle was not located.
He asked the girl to get into the van. The girl refused, ran to a friend’s house, and immediately reported the incident.Video surveillance in the area provided the only images of a vehicle that police have from any of the eight instances across the province. She said the most important thing for parents or guardians to do is talk to their children about what they should do if they are ever faced with such a situation.
“Our officers are certainly conducting patrols within the communities, and we do encourage that any suspicious activity be reported.”
