It would take something far greater than a murky land development controversy to get Ford out of office.
That brings us to Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his current ethical challenge. Like Tory, Ford has solid support from voters and is unchallenged politically. The problem is, Ford’s decision to make some Greenbelt land available for housing and whether there was some kind of heads up for developers to get in on the action early. The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit.
Ford denies that Greenbelt land-buyers got any special treatment, but there’s no doubt he’s friendly with some developers. They were invited to his daughter’s wedding last year and to a pre-wedding event where cash contributions to the happy couple were said to be expected. One of the invitees has benefited from fast-tracking of development and another could benefit from opening up Greenbelt land.
Wake is investigating an allegation that Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark broke insider information and conflict-of-interest rules by divulging the plan to open up parts of the Greenbelt for development before it was announced publicly. Clark denies it. Ontario’s auditor general is also investigating the Greenbelt land deal, but only the financial and environmental implications, not the political questions.
The Greenbelt matter has so far failed to yield any conclusive evidence of wrongdoing, and if there was some, the people involved aren’t going to admit it. Ford is likely to escape the controversy with little more than a minor political dent, unless there is a surprise coming.Article content
