Multisport endurance race back on the city sports scene after two-year pandemic postponement
The 36th annual midwinter multisport endurance race starts Sunday morning at Otway Nordic Centre and 347 competitors, including 34 soloists, 59 adult teams and 13 junior teams have signed up for it.
Depending on the condition of the ice, which is currently not in great shape, skaters will complete 12 laps of the 400-metre rink then put their running shoes back on for a five-km run through the Pinewood subdivision to the Prince George Aquatic Centre for the final segment, an 800-metre swim. Junior competitors aged 10-15 compete on teams and complete a shorter course that starts with a four-km ski. The 10-km run is divided in half between two runners. If the oval ice will allow it, skaters will complete seven laps on the oval, followed by the five-km run and a 400-m swim.
There’s very limited parking near the ice oval and spectators should avoid using the road access north of the oval that connects with 18th Avenue because that’s where runners will be approaching at the end of their 10 km runs. Spectators will not be allowed at ice level. The weather might be a bit of an issue with rain and above-average temperatures forecast for the weekend but the two most critical outdoor venues, the ski trails and the ice oval, are in good shape this week. Periods of snow are predicted for Saturday with a high of 3 C and a low of 0 C. That switches to periods of rain on Sunday and a high of 8 C.
