It’s emblematic of a broader shift in our cultural landscape with potentially seismic political implications.
And as for the so-called “woke moralists” who still hold a near-monopoly on our major social and cultural institutions? Well, after decades of controlling the political agenda on matters like sexuality, recreational drug use and criminal justice, this group appears to finally be on the retreat. When they’re not busying themselves with internecine rounds of recrimination — take, for instance, theplaying out at Canada’s National Gallery — our left-of-centre cultural vanguard is hemming itself into untenable political positions.
The loosening of the left’s hegemonic grip on mainstream culture is perhaps most evident in the realm of K-12 education. In their hardheaded insistence on making drag performers and contested racial theories fixtures of primary school curricula, lefty educators have, remarkably, driven an entire generation of Gen X and elder millennial parents into the arms of “anti-woke” politicians like Florida’s Ron DeSantis. .
