Offshore fleets will lose millions after losing nine percent of turbot catches

The Greenland Halibut, commonly known as turbot, is a highly-valued white fish. - Department of Fisheries and OceansIt’s not a pretty fish, but the value of the bottom-dwelling Greenland halibut is not in its looks.

In another fishing area, labelled 0B, the average annual landed value has ranged from $43 million to $50 million, with just over half landed by the Newfoundland and Labrador fleet, and Nunavut catches valued at about $20 million annually.A map issued by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans showing the Northern NAFO fishing zones. - Department of Fisheries and Oceans

The area that is also fished by other vessels from Atlantic Canada, who take more of the overall quota there. “Unfortunately, the minister chose not to do that, and that is certainly regrettable,” said Butler, adding, “This does not appear in keeping with the federal government’s own stated commitment to reconciliation, nor the Act.”

Because the Greenland halibut stock is transboundary—with Canada and Denmark having fishing rights in the waters between the two countries—the NAFO science council is involved in the stock assessment. Dr. Chris Vascotto, executive director of the Atlantic Groundfish Council , agrees the quota cuts will have “significant” economic impacts for their member fishing fleets.

However, Vascotto said, they are limited in the time and resources they can devote to science when their main priority is fishing.“We continue to be very keenly interested in supporting the department to get these surveys over the finish line so that when we get advice, we know that we can point back to the survey for the scientific piece of information, the well-informed assessment model to say this is the right decision that you're making . . .
