Sharri Markson can reveal football's governing body had invited Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen to attend the Women's World Cup final in Australia this weekend. The Sky News host confirmed with FIFA that an invitation was extended to Ms Tsai, but the President will not be attending Sunday night's final at Sydney's Stadium Australia.
"The FIFA Women's World Cup presents an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements in sports and to enhance positive change, both in women's football and gender equality," the Taiwanese consulate told Markson. "The nation's first female President. We will continue to pursue broad engagement with like-minded countries toward these goals.""DFAT told investigations producer Dom Vukovic: 'FIFA invitations to World Cup matches are a matter for FIFA. We value our deep and productive unofficial relationship with Taiwan, consistent with our long-standing bipartisan One-China policy'," she said.
Markson said she received"a very telling answer", when the embassy redirected her queries back to FIFA or Australian authorities. "And then it all fell apart, with the Taiwanese embassy telling us - FIFA or the Australian authorities would be in a better position to answer why the President is no longer coming."Because Taiwan is in the vulnerable position of facing the imminent threat of an invasion by China.
Markson suggested Mr Albanese had revoked the invitation to avoid further tensions with China amid President Xi Jinping's bid for reunification with Taiwan.
