Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will announce her government’s new approach, expecting to centre pumped hydro projects, in a speech on Wednesday afternoon.

Queensland will generate 70 per cent of its electricity with renewable technology by 2032, as part of a push beyond lagging targets to reset energy policy before the state election in two years.

Borumba Dam near Gympie, with its 43-metre high dam wall, is being considered as a potential pumped hydro site, like Wivenhoe and Somerset dams. “We’re taking real action on climate change, now,” she said. “It’s all about a future of cheaper, cleaner and secure energy for Queenslanders, powering good jobs in new regional industries.”could fall short of its 50 per cent renewable energy target
