Transport minister says e-scooter riders ‘equally culpable’ as other road users as he introduces new laws to parliament
will be forced to remain at the scene of an accident and could face fines of more than $6,000 for dangerous behaviour under new laws governing the use of the devices on footpaths and bike paths.
He said scooter riders could be hit with court appearances and penalties of up to $6,192 under the new rules. Abraham Leung, a researcher at Griffith University, has studied the enforcement of e-scooter use in the Asia Pacific region. He said Queensland’s new laws wouldn’t be as strict as some jurisdictions such as Singapore, where e-scooters must have registration like a car, or Hong Kong, which bans them outright.
