Former players detailed alleged abuse that lasted full seasons — only to pick up again when a player was traded to a new team.
Canadian Hockey League president Dan MacKenzie, right, meets Quebec Major Junior Hockey League president Gilles Courteau at a legislature committee studying initiations in junior teams, on Feb. 22, 2023, at the legislature in Quebec City.
A Quebec national assembly committee heard from witnesses about abusive initiation practices in sports on Wednesday, following an Ontario Superior Court rejection of a class action lawsuit by junior hockey players. Justice Paul Perell described evidence he heard in the case brought by former junior player Daniel Carcillo as “horrific.” Carcillo and other players detailed alleged abuse that lasted full hockey seasons — only to pick up again when a player was traded to a new team.
Carcillo played for teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in Halifax and Moncton, the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League, and the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League. He brought his suit against the Canadian Hockey League, which includes all three regional leagues.
