PETALING JAYA: National top doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have failed in their bid to secure an early passage to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics.
The world No. 9 were outplayed 16-21, 19-21 by three-time world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan in the second tie of Group D at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza on Monday.
Playing the Indonesians for the eighth time, Aaron-Wooi Yik still found it tough to deal with the veterans' first three shots as they went down to their seventh defeat. Aaron-Wooi Yik are expected to breeze through against Jason Ho-shue-Nyl Yakura of Canada in their final match on Tuesday, but whether they get through to the quarter-finals will depend on the outcome of Ahsan-Hendra's match against South Korea's Choi Sol-gyu-Seo Seung-jae.
In the event Sol-gyu-Seung-jae overcome Ahsan-Hendra in straight games, the final standings could be determined by point difference. Only the top two pairs advance to the last eight. Meanwhile, the 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallsists Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying ended their Olympics campaign without any win in Group D after going down 13-21, 19-21 to Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China.
