Ben Ikin believes Billy Slater – whom he likened to Mal Meninga and Craig Bellamy – will spearhead the Maroons’ quest for a third straight State of Origin series win.
Queensland Rugby League chief Ben Ikin is “more confident than I’m not” that Billy Slater will ink a contract extension to remain at the helm of the Maroons, likening the State of Origin champion to two of the game’s leading coaches.
As for what had made Slater such an immediate success in the top job, Ikin said elements of both Melbourne Storm mastermind Craig Bellamy and all-time leading Origin coach Mal Meninga featured in the legendary fullback’s style. “I see elements of both Mal and Craig in Billy’s coaching. Beyond that, he loves the fact that there was a generation of players who came before him that these players have to respect.
