Qantas has hired headhunters to find a replacement for Alan Joyce as the highly profitable airline seeks to replace arguably the most polarising figure in corporate Australia.

Ms Hudson joined Qantas in 1994 and, in 2018, became the chief commercial officer before being promoted to CFO one year later in an executive reshuffle. Counting in her favour will be the management of the carrier’s balance sheet during COVID-19, and its recent return to profitability after losses that totalled about $7 billion during the previous two financial years.

Other internal candidates expected to have been interested in the position have left over the last few years, most recently Gareth Evans, who was in charge of Jetstar until June, and Tino La Spina, the former CFO and Qantas International chief. Despite speculation that Mr Wallace could be in the running for Mr Joyce’s position, internal sources have suggested he was unlikely to be in contention despite his airline experience.

“In one of the greatest shocks in aviation history, they’ve come out the other side well and that experience is irreplaceable. With the board and with Alan there at the moment … I, personally, think it is in pretty good hands,” he said.
