With the fate of the 72 people onboard Yeti Airlines flight 691 on Sunday still fresh in the memory, today’s events should be evidence that we in Australia have a well-founded aviation safety culture that protects our lives.
The aircraft, a 737 twinned-engine jet, had 144 passengers onboard when one of its engines failed en route from Auckland.
Qantas flight QF144 on Wednesday issued a mayday alert about an hour out from Sydney International Airport. Some may be asking why there was such a high level of emergency response at the airport given the lower perceived risk. This emergency response is triggered by calls from an incoming or departed aircraft back to air traffic control.
These will be overseen by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, who will themselves conduct an independent review. Earlier this year, the airline was again judged the world’s safest airline by safety rating website AirlineRatings.com – adding to its top-place ranking between 2014 and 2017, in addition to 2019 and 2021.
It could well be said that that the Qantas safety record has its roots in the famous Benjamin Franklin adage - “When in doubt, don’t”.
