Qantas has been hit with a class action lawsuit, as customers allege the airline unfairly profited from providing restrictive, time-limited travel credits and vouchers instead of refunds for trips cancelled during the pandemic.

The class action, announced on Monday, was launched by Echo Law after thousands of customers complained to the consumer watchdog over the airline's handling of its COVID-19 travel credits program.

"Echo Law has commenced a class action on behalf of Qantas customers who held tickets for domestic or international flights cancelled due to COVID-19 travel restrictions," a statement announcing the lawsuit read."Instead, Qantas issued the majority of its customers with travel credits or vouchers, which were subject to significant restrictions and would expire if not used.

Echo Law said it believed even travellers who had already redeemed travel credits were still entitled for compensation, given the discrepancy between their value and a full refund. Mr Paull added that if the airline had chosen to withhold the money to ensure its own financial stability then it was in effect treating customers"as the source of a loan."

Qantas has copped heavy criticism for its COVID-19 travel credits program, with thousands of customers lodging complaints with consumer watchdog, the ACCC.
