Nicolas McCarthy is the director of marketing, communications and community outreach at Beechwood Cemetery. To mark the 150th anniversary of Beechwood, he produced a 600-ft. picture gallery composed of 150 curated images providing a visual history of the National Cemetery of Canada.
Q. Cemeteries are places for the living to remember and honour the dead. Tell us about your job and this project for the 150th anniversary, and how Beechwood impacts our community. The idea is to show Beechwood as a whole, but show our evolution from that Bytown era, going back to Barrack Hill, which became Parliament Hill. As you go through that history, you see the evolution of Ottawa from a rough-and- tumble lumber town to an emerging capital and now the capital of a G7 country that is very lively, full of events and ceremony.
Q. When you go to Boston, you visit the cemetery where Ben Franklin is buried. In Paris, people visit the Père Lachaise and the tomb of Jim Morrison. What’s Beechwood’s equivalent?
