In 2013, when membership applications mushroomed to more than 100,000 — one fifth the population of Newfoundland and Labrador — authorities went back to the drawing board. This summer, White was awarded the second annual Lanier Phillips award by the theatre company Artistic Fraud. The award is named after the Black American sailor who dedicated his life to advocating for racial equality after he was rescued off the Burin Peninsula during the 1942 Truxton and Pullox disaster.
