Trade Minister Don Farrell will seek the full restart of exports to China of wine, barley and other goods, which are locked up in damaging trade disputes, when he touches down in Beijing today.
As the easing of tensions between the two countries gathers pace, there are expectations China will give ground and allow for further progress on the resolution of disputes that have hit $20 billion worth of exports.
Ahead of a possible visit to China by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese later this year, the meetings follow Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s breakthrough trip in December, seen as a major step in stabilising the relationship with Australia’s largest trading partner.China open to easing trade bans “In February, Minister Wang and I agreed to enhanced dialogue at all levels as a pathway towards the full resumption of trade,” Senator Farrell said.“Since then, the Australian government is pleased there have been several positive trade developments, including the resumption of coal, cotton, and copper trade and China’s agreement to undertake an expedited review of duties on Australian barley.”
