Kg Lobong in Gaya Island, here, was rid of 12 tonnes of waste by the end of the Mega Island Beach Clean Up programme recently.
Organised by the Meraki Daat Sabah Initiative, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability, it was part of the Unwrapping Plastics Project and Stage 1 of Project Picasso which saw participation from 300 villagers including children and some 125 volunteers from the mainland.Its President, Michelle De La Harpe, said the event was aimed at raising awareness about the growing problem of plastic pollution while promoting the importance of keeping our oceans clean.
