Ex-tropical cyclone Ellie crossed into Western Australia from the Northern Territory on December 28, 2022.Major flooding has occurred along the Fitzroy River to Fitzroy Crossing, reaching record levels of 15.81m.
Roads and associated infrastructure have been damaged and floodwaters have isolated towns including Fitzroy Crossing and many remote Indigenous communities along the Fitzroy River.A helicopter drops hay for cattle in the Kimberley near Broome, with farmers among those worst-hit by the floods.More than 230 people have so far been pulled from the danger zone, including children playing in floodwaters.Parts of the Kimberley look like an inland sea in an area usually known for its intense heat.

Search and rescue start ‘rapid damage assessments’ in the KimberleyWestern Australia Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson says urban search and rescue state logistics teams have started “rapid damage assessments” on flood-affected regions in the Kimberley. “Multi-agency clean-up crew comprising DFES staff and volunteers, and Australian Defence Force Personnel, has been mobilised to the region to start the huge recovery effort,” he said. “134 rapid damage assessments have been completed in Fitzroy Crossing, Boorowa, and Junjuwa communities.”
