PSA Awards: Celebrating the victories of Filipino athletes MBOpinions READ:
In a unique night of celebration that is comparable to the glitz of the Oscars, with vigor channeled from the Olympic fire, the stars will align for a toast of victory—athletes, men and women, the late legends and the young ones – all named and acknowledged for a memorable 2022 at the annual Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night on March 6.
Hidilyn Diaz, the golden girl of Zamboanga, is bound to claim her fourth Athlete of the Year plum after ruling the women’s 55-kilogram class of the IWF World Weightlifting Championships last December in Colombia. It was the final piece in her set of shiny accolades that already included medals from Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and the Olympics. She is only the third person to win the top award four times after Filipino boxers Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire Jr.
The Filipina warriors of the national football team, meanwhile, sent shockwaves after earning a place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup this coming July after a podium finish at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. For her US Open Juniors singles title, Alex Eala stands to claim the President’s Awards to be handed out by PSA President Rey Lachica of Tempo, while the contributions of sprint queen Lydia De Vega to Philippine sports will be celebrated in a packed hall of not just achievers, but also dreamers of becoming a version of “Diay” someday.
