Greater Sudbury drafting letter stating concern that development could become less focused on serviced areas in a shift to rural, unserviced lands
By flagging “potentially problematic” provisions within the province’s draft planning statement, city officials are contributing to the Government of Ontario’s public consultation process.
As with Bill 23 , the updated policy is another tool the province plans on using to accomplish their goal of having 1.5 million new homes built by 2032. “Additionally, the proposed statement has struck the provision that intensification and redevelopment within settlement areas be directed to locations of existing municipal services to optimize the use of these services.”
A positive in the new proposed Provincial Planning Statement is that it carries supportive language around things such as complete communities, and other planning terms centred on residential density, Chabot said. These positive steps are incongruent with some other areas of the statement, which support the rural development of residential lots without municipal services and the creation of residential lots in prime agricultural areas.
