During a two-week trial, EMS dispatchers have redirected approximately 1,000 low-acuity calls from ambulance responses to 811 for assistance, said Health Minister Jason Copping. Williams’ injuries were initially labelled as serious but non-life-threatening, which the review found did impact EMS response time. Betty Ann Williams, 86, died after she was attacked by three dogs in a northwest Calgary alley on June 5, 2022.“This challenge wasn’t created overnight and it’s going to take us time to get there,” said Copping. “It’ll be a lot of little changes across our entire system that are going to fix it, and quite frankly, more are coming.”
“The ambulance response is then called off, freeing up the ambulance and crew to be available for other emergencies,” said Cowell.
