The provincial government announced a new five-point plan to build more affordable housing on Monday– hours before the House of Assembly's first session, where housing and cost of living dominated question period discussions.
'It's not shelters we want to be in': Tent city occupants sick of falling through cracks in Newfoundland and LabradorThe plan's second point features a new low-interest financing program which will provide financing to assist in constructing purpose-built rental housing, including modular or converting non-residential buildings into purpose-built rentals.
All surplus Crown land and buildings will be assessed for housing suitability. Sites that are in high-demand areas and close to amenities will be prioritized. This program will operate on a sliding scale. Those who make under $85k per year are eligible for the total amount, and those who make up to $95k are eligible for partial amounts. The final point is a Secondary and Basement Suite Incentive, which will operate as a pilot project to create affordable rental housing within the existing housing supply for less than the cost of building a large-scale, multi-unit housing development.
