Daniel Duyunganwas 'deeply committed to his studies'
A coroner has warned that there "will always" be a risk when people use illicit drugs after a University of Nottingham student died last year. An inquest at Nottingham Coroner's Court on Monday, September 4, heard that Daniel Duyungan died due to taking a "high amount" of MDMA, a psychedelic drug.
After Daniel asked for help, event security sent for a first responder to come and help him. Bethan Griffiths was working as a student paramedic at the arena and was one of the paramedics sent to help Daniel. She handed over to other paramedics who were better equipped to help Daniel, but it was shortly after this that he changed and became "agitated" and started "kicking out." Daniel had to be restrained by staff at the arena as his legs and upper body became "rigid."
She continued: "The general opinion of Daniel was that he was not addicted to drugs, he would use drugs occasionally at big events, but he would have never let it affect his studies in any way. In regards to MDMA, he had taken this before, not on frequent occasions but I think on one or two occasions.
Claire Thompson, associate director of student wellbeing, provided the court with a statement ahead of the proceedings. She explained that the university was "deeply saddened by Daniel's death", and during his time at university Daniel had been a good student, achieved strong grades and was "committed to his studies."
